Hello,
I am a Research Associate in Democratic Politics at the University of Glasgow, working on the ERC-funded project Democracy Under Threat: How Education Can Save It (DEMED), led by Prof. Anja Neundorf.
My research examines how political order and democratic legitimacy are shaped under conditions of insecurity. Using African cases as a starting point, I study how violence, threat, and external influence reshape citizens’ political attitudes and support for democracy, with the aim of contributing to broader debates on how authority is constructed and sustained.
My work develops along two closely connected lines. First, I analyse how conflict—such as terrorism, armed violence, and riots—transforms political behaviour and preferences, and how citizens adjust their expectations of political authority in contexts of crisis. This includes both qualitative work on state-building and securitisation, and quantitative analysis of how exposure to violence affects attitudes and behaviour. Second, I examine whether and how democratic support can be strengthened through interventions, including civic education and political communication.
More broadly, my research is driven by a central question: what sustains democratic legitimacy when security is uncertain and external support is shifting?
Methodologically, I combine theoretical work with both qualitative and quantitative approaches, including process tracing, discourse analysis, randomised controlled trials, quasi-experimental designs, and spatial analysis. This mixed-methods approach allows me to identify both causal effects and the mechanisms through which political attitudes and authority are reshaped.
